Keynote Speaker: David Sommerstein
David Sommerstein, news director for
North Country Public Radio in Canton, NY, will be the keynote speaker at the 2024 PRSA Northeast District Conference. In August 2024, North Country Public Radio’s news and digital team, led by Sommerstein, received one of the highest honors in broadcasting from the Radio Television Digital News Association: the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence.
Sommerstein’s talk,
NCPR: Small Station, Big Impact, will focus on how a small-market public radio station is setting a high standard for news reporting and community engagement in today’s challenging media environment, and the important role local media play in building community trust in media. His talk will lead conference attendees into a day filled with informative and inspiring sessions related to the conference theme, PR at a Crossroads (Again).
Sommerstein has been news director at NCPR since 2018 and an NCPR reporter since 2000. His reporting has been featured regularly on NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered and other national programs. In addition to the Murrow Award, Sommerstein has won numerous national awards from the Public Media Journalists Association, Radio Television Digital News Association, and the Society for Professional Journalists. He also hosts a popular weekly music show called
The Beat Authority, playing world dance and groove music from all over the world.

About the Conference
The Central New York Chapter of PRSA is honored to present
PRxNE2024: PR at a Crossroads (Again), a one-day conference on Friday, November 15, designed for communications professionals at all stages in their careers and students in the
PRSA Northeast District. The conference will take place in Syracuse, NY at the
Marriott Syracuse Downtown. Join a group of 150+ communications professionals from seven states and eight chapters! The Northeast District boundaries extend west to Buffalo, east to Boston, and north to Bangor.
Our conference theme
PR at a Crossroads (Again) reflects the ever-changing and ever-challenging environment in public relations. As part of this, presentations will explore the ways that public relations is at the intersection of social and political pressures, as well as the opportunities that come with the ever-evolving media landscape, new marketing trends, and artificial intelligence.
